On 12 January 2023, the MINDS CDT held its first annual symposium in Building 100 on the Highfield Campus at the University of Southampton. Thirty-two students from cohorts 1 to 4 attended, making it one of the largest gatherings of MINDS researchers to date.
The format was designed to give every cohort a voice. Cohort 1 students, approaching the final year of their PhDs, each gave a 15-minute presentation on their project and results, followed by questions from the audience. Students from cohorts 2 and 3 gave five-minute flash presentations, with the aim of communicating their research clearly and concisely to their fellow researchers.
The goal of the symposium was to give all MINDS CDT students a clear picture of the breadth of research being carried out across the programme, and to create a space for researchers at different stages to connect, exchange ideas and learn from one another. With projects spanning agent-based systems, embedded AI and nanoelectronic devices, the range of work on display reflected the full scope of what MINDS was built to do.
The symposium has since become a regular fixture in the MINDS calendar, giving each new cohort a chance to present their work and engage with the wider research community built up across the programme.
