The MINDS CDT ran a summer internship programme giving undergraduate students the opportunity to work alongside doctoral researchers on live projects at the intersection of AI and electronics.
Internship applications are now closed. The programme is no longer running.
One intern worked with Dr Bahar Rastegari and two MINDS doctoral researchers on the Distributed Inference project investigating techniques for splitting trained deep learning models across multiple coordinating hardware devices. Using AlexNet to train an image classification model on CIFAR-10, she decentralised the model across two Raspberry Pis and a PC to develop a working proof of concept.
A second intern worked with Dr Christine Evers and two doctoral researchers on the Audio at the Edge project investigating neural networks for IoT devices that can detect voice activity from streaming audio data. Working in a virtual environment simulating an Android mobile device receiving emulated audio signals in real time, he demonstrated how voices can be distinguished using his deep neural network design.
