Olaf Lipinski MINDS CDT, 2019

Senior Machine Learning Scientist, Visa; Visiting Fellow, University of Southampton

Olaf Lipinski is a MINDS alumnus. His doctoral research investigated how autonomous AI agents develop languages from scratch, focusing on the temporal dynamics of those languages. He examined how agents learn to refer to events across time, how they perceive sequences of events, and how time affects the way they communicate with one another.

Alongside this, he developed methods for understanding the communication protocols these agents create, and designed architectures that help agents build a temporal understanding of their data. The aim of this work is to improve how efficiently and flexibly autonomous AI agents can communicate, and to make the languages they develop more interpretable to the people who build and oversee them.

His work has been published at venues including NeurIPS and the EmeCom workshop at ICLR, with further outputs on arXiv.

Olaf is now a Senior Machine Learning Scientist at Visa and continues to work with the University of Southampton as a Visiting Fellow.
